Hello!! My name is Jim Brown and I teach physical education at Slate Creek and Walton Elementary Schools in the Newton KS USD 373 school district. Newton is a town of about 18,000 people and is located in south central Kansas just north of Wichita. Slate Creek is a K-4 school with an enrollment of about 275 students. Walton is a small town located 7 miles from Slate Creek the school has an enrollment of about 150 students.I am originally from Alma NE. I attended Kindergarten through 12th grade in the Alma Public Schools. It was neat having all the grades in one building as it forced us to have a sense of community that sometimes schools don't have. After graduation from AHS I attended Wayne State College in Wayne NE. At WSC I majored in Physical Education and Health K-12. I also served as an athletic trainer. During my tenure there I worked with several of the sports teams. Most of my time was spent with the Men's and Women's Basketball teams, the Baseball team, and the Football team. In May of 1983 I received my degree. After graduation I began my teaching career at the Rokeby and Lone Pine Schools located in the rural areas surrounding Lincoln NE. It was lots of fun working at both of these country schools. During this time I also served as a substitute teacher for the Lincoln Public Schools. I had a variety of assignments. I worked in classrooms teaching everything from Voc. Agriculture to Physical Education K-12. My first full time assignment was at Norwood Park Elementary in Lincoln. After three years at Norwood Park I had the opportunity to move to Emporia KS and teach at Mary Herbert Elementary. This also allowed me to be close to some of the leading Physical Education minds in the nation at Emporia State University. After much urging from friends and teachers alike I began working on my masters degree. In 2005 I received my MA in Health and Physical Education from ESU. While in Emporia I also taught at Lowther South Intermediate School and Emporia High School. In 2006 I realized that I was missing working with elementary aged children and was made aware of an opportunity in Newton. I was honored to be given the chance to once again work with young children and strive to this day to provide the quality program of physical education that each of my students deserves. I am married to Jonni Brown who is also a teacher in the Newton Public Schools and have two children , a girl Elizabeth and a son Erik who are both students in the Newton Public Schools. My hobbies include watching sports especially college football and professional baseball. My favorite teams are the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the St. Louis Cardinals. I also enjoy reading, listening to music and spending time with my family.
